Which contract template do you need for clients in the UK and overseas?

“Do I need UK contracts and Global contracts if I am based in the UK with just a few customers outside the UK?”

This is a question we are often asked.

UK contracts are written for the UK

When it comes to things like data processing in particular they are a lot simpler than the global contracts which have to deal with something known as ‘cross border data transfers’.

It can sometimes be difficult to get a client who knows nothing about UK data privacy to give you the necessary paperwork so you can work with their own prospect, customer and team data.

That’s why we support you to help you bring your client on board.

But giving a UK client the cross-border data paperwork is likely to put them into a spin.

Global contract templates are written with cross-border data transfers in mind

– you need the right paperwork!

If you want to find out more you can visit the UK Information Commissioner’s page, which you can find here.

It is not easy if you are a micropreneur to figure out exactly what you need to issue to who and when – which is why we have figured it all out for you.

Your global contracts packs include pre-completed forms and documents designed to help you and your client fill in the last few bits that only your client knows the answer to.

But for UK clients and freelancers, it is a big pack and total overkill unless you need it.

Do I need both contracts (UK and Global)?

If you mostly trade in the UK, choose the UK range and add on the free-standing Global GDPR pack as a separate purchase, when needed. That way you are not confusing your UK clients, but have all that you need for your global ones.

You can find the free-standing data processing agreement here

Like everything else we do it comes with a full set of ‘how to’ videos telling you what your documents mean and which ones you need to use when, and group support in Facebook so you can ask your questions.

If you are not based in the UK and are supporting or being supported by someone in another country, choose the Global range. It is a bigger pack and you won’t need the free-standing Global GDPR pack as those documents are included in your purchase.

Didn’t Brexit abolish all this GDPR stuff?

The UK has already updated its cross-border data transfers after Brexit and the most recent updates are in your cross-border and free-standing data processing pack.

Changes are planned for the UK internal system of data privacy, but all of the updates are in draft and have not yet passed through Parliament. When they get to their final form and become law, we update our packs and your how-to videos that explain how and when to use what.

If you are a customer within your support period you will automatically get the updates without the need to purchase again

Support periods vary depending on the level you purchased. You can find out more here.

Do you struggle with contracts?

If you are running a micro business then the whole thing about contracts can seem like a nightmare. That’s why all our documents come with extensive videos explaining what the documents mean, and when you need to use them. And you get group support too in our customer-only Facebook group where you can ask as many questions as you like.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by all of this, but once you get started you will soon get to grips with what is needed and we are there to help you every step of the way.
